Swedish Massage Therapy

Jul 16, 2009

What is Swedish massage therapy? It is a technique designed to help the muscles in the body relax by applying pressure and then rubbing it in the same direction as the flow of blood retuing to the heart. Unlike other methods of massage therapy, this was first developed in the 18th century. It is also called the "classic massage" because it represents the Weste way of relaxing those muscles. The main purpose of the Swedish massage then and now is still the same. This is to increase the flow of oxygen in the blood so toxins are released from the muscles. These toxins include lactic and uric acid as well as metabolic waste. When this happens, circulation is increased without increasing the heart load. The ligaments and tendons are both stretched keeping them supple and pliable. This also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves at the same time. As a result, stress is reduced. There are various techniques in the Swedish massage. Some examples of these are friction, effleurage, kneading, tapping, long strokes, vibrations and shaking motions. The therapist may use the fingertips, hands or palm to achieve maximum effect and of course, a little bit of bending and stretching. During the session, the person has to undress and lie down on the mattress. He or she is then covered with a blanket and the only time it is opened is when the therapist has to massage that region of the body with oil so this will be absorbed by the body. If you do not feel comfortable about being nude, bring some old loose clothes because the oil may stain fabrics. A Swedish massage usually lasts for 60 to 90 minutes. Before the session begins, the therapist may check your complexion then choose the type of oil to use based on your skin type. If ever you want to increase or decrease the pressure, just say so and the therapist will adjust accordingly. In the room, you may hear some soothing music playing in the background as this has been known to help people unwind. If you don't like it, just tell them so they can play something else or just tu it off. You might notice that the therapist would like to chat while working on you. Just like the music, if you don't feel like talking, just tell them. Don't worry, they won't be offended. Lastly, some people sleep during Swedish massage therapy. Again, that is perfectly fine because it has been known to happen. Swedish massage therapy is considered to be the foundation of other types of Weste massages. This is because the principles behind it are the same as when you try sports massage, seated chair massage, hot stone therapy, deep tissue massage or aromatherapy. If you like the way you were treated, try out the others the next time you drop by. Before going for a session, check with your doctor if it is safe for you to do. You should also avoid eating a heavy meal before going in. Swedish massage therapy is good. Once the session is over, you will feel relaxed and invigorated. Since you will feel thirsty afterwards, you better drink up. Some places offer water while others hand out warm tea. Whenever you are ready, it is time for you to get dressed and head on home.

The Budding Disorders: Mental Health of Children

Jul 15, 2009

We would like to think that we have built our environments in such a way that they minimize the factors that could result to psychological and behavioral disturbances among individuals. Thus, optimizing our mental health. But statistics tell us that the majority of our population's mental health is largely subjected to negative environments. Complications brought about by negative environment For many children, symptoms of psychological disorders are linked to the negative stressors in the environment. In the United States alone, one in every five children suffers severe physical abuse and one in every group of five lives below the poverty line. Additionally, psychosocial structures in cities where there is poor housing expose children to violence that could detriment their mental health. (You can imagine how many children in other countries which have far lower economic status and far fewer programs for child protection are subjected to negative stressors.) Both of the above stressors are considered as traumatic experiences to children that could resurface as psychological disorders during adulthood. A negative or a positive environment during childhood explains why there are adults who are more likely than not to develop psychological disorders and there are those who are not affected by these at all. For example, children who repeatedly experienced sexual trauma or sexual abuse are most likely to develop dissociative disorders such as multiple personality disorder. The rate of victimization within intimate relationships only reinforces the dissociative response. Also, repetitive exposure to violence or to the activities of a dysfunctional environment could also contribute to the development of severe dissociative disorders. These mental illnesses root from the child's effort to deny the violence, abuse, or trauma they experience as coping mechanism so as to protect his mental wellness. However, failure to completely get over these experiences would result to the impairment of his psychological wellness and even his social and emotional well-being. Parental deprivations Some researchers assumed that the large difference in number of psychological disorders being treated these days as compared to prevalence in the past century is largely contributed by dysfunctional family structures and parental deprivations. Indifference and neglect by familial figures, mateal-social deprivations, isolation and separation from parents are viewed as the root causes of psychological disorders such as depressions, mental retardation, psychomotor impairments and the manifestations of autistic-like behaviors among children. Pathogenic Parent-Child Relationship The traumatic interpersonal relationship between a parent or a parent-figure and a child is viewed as a negative environment for the child's growth and development. This relationship only means that their relationship is structured in the manner that it damages a child's psychological well-being. These give stress to certain beliefs that are psychologically unfavorable to the child such as irrational beliefs on self-blame, irrational explanations on traumatic experiences, maladaptive behaviors, unconscious guilt, shame and doubt about oneself. These beliefs are very powerful and could lead the child to over generalize negative incidents. Children experience all sorts of negative environments including war and violence, daily stress, economic problems and accelerating negative effects of technological changes. But among these, the most aggravated is the disabling relationship he has with his immediate environment- his parents, his family and his direct interaction to his society. Above everything else, there is a need to modify these negative environments in order to develop children with better mental health and in the future, adults who can readily adapt to the stressors from their environments.

Chakra Meditation Basics

Chakra meditation is one of the more popular meditation techniques used today. Its philosophy is based upon the discovery or the search of the charkas. A charka can be considered as an energy point or force in the body that tries to gove different physical, mental and spiritual functions in an individual. It is the practice of awakening the charka in the body that is the aim of chakra meditation. According to the practice of chakra meditation, there are seven chakras locate din the different parts of the body. Each one goves different bodily functions and may also provide different benefits when awakened through meditation. One of the charka is the Mooldhara or the "root place". This chakra is located somewhere in the cervix in women and in the perineum in men. It is said to gove the skeletal and the excretory system of the body. The Mooldhara may also affect the sense of smell as well as the legs and the cervix. Attributes to it include the basic life force, material attachment, procreation, and response to stimuli of labor for women. Another of the seven chakras is the Swadhistana or "place of one's abode". It can be located somewhere at the tip of the spinal column. It is said to affect the urinary system such as the kidney and the bladder. Other bodily systems that this chakra may affect include the reproductive system such as the ovaries, fallopian tube and the uterus in women and the testes and prostrate gland in men. Attributes connected to this chakra include the sense of taste, the ability to analyze, a balanced sex drive, high fertility and no fear of water. The third chakra is the Manipura or the "city of sparkling jewels". This chakra is located in the spinal column somewhere in the lumbar junction of the L1 and T12 vertebras. It is said to affect the digestive system, the adrenal glands as well as the sympathetic and the parasympathetic systems of the body. This chakra is attributed to power, ego, self confidence, strength and good assimilation and digestion. The fourth chakra is the Anahata or "unstruck". This chakra is located in the spinal column somewhere in the center of the chest. It is said to affect the cardiovascular, respiratory system as well as the muscular system. This chakra is attributed to a person's emotions, relationships, love, and ability to express oneself through the arts. If this chakra is afflicted in the body, it is said to lead to respiratory disorders, heart problems, and low immunity. It may also lead to a person having fear of loneliness, experience some form of emotional imbalance and the inability to maintain friends There is also the Vishudh chakra or "purification". It is located in the spinal column somewhere at the C7 vertebrae. It is said to affect the thyroid and parathyroid glands, as well as the function of the throat including the voice, ears, sense of hearing. Attributes to this chakra include the transformation of thoughts into speech, better ability to speak or sing, and the acute sense of hearing. If afflicted, this chakra may cause thyroid imbalance, restriction in the voice as well as the inability to comprehend and understand. The Ajna, or "command" chakra is said to be located in the mid-center of the brain somewhere at the top of the spinal cord. It goves the autonomic nervous system, pineal gland, and the pituitary gland. This chakra is also said to be attributed to the sense of intuition, higher level of mind and wisdom that is beyond normal intellect. The Sahasrara or the "one thousand" chakra is said to have various positions according to different ancient texts but is usually found at the base of scalp. It is said to control no specific bodily system but has the overall control of the brain. The knowledge of the seven chakras is the basic in better understanding chakra meditation.

How Exercising can help with Gestational Diabetes

Unless you already have a regular fitness routine, you probably don't want to start one half way through your pregnancy. But the benefits that you will derive as a woman with gestational diabetes who exercises will make the physical activity worth it in the end. Before you begin any new physical activity or routine, discuss with your doctor any guidelines you need to follow or waing signs you should heed. You do need to be aware and careful about when you eat and take your insulin in relation to any physical exercise. If you wait too long after eating to exercise you will cause your blood sugar to drop dangerously low. A good rule to follow at any time – exercising or not – is to have a snack with you to raise your blood sugar quickly. A good snack is something high in sugar that will raise your blood sugar quickly like a juice box or a piece of fruit. Have a snack with you that is long-acting too such as a granola bar. You can also purchase glucose tablets for emergencies when you become hypoglycemic. The best time to exercise is after one of your main meals. If you can fit in a 15-20 minute walk three times a day it would be idea. But if you cannot try and go for a bit of a longer walk at least once per day. When at work go for a walk after lunch or schedule a family walk every night after dinner. If you already have an established exercise routine it is probably safe for you to do more but a vigorous or leisurely walk is extremely beneficial. Exercising will help you keep your blood glucose levels under control and increase your energy. Getting in shape through exercise before delivery can help your labor progress smoothly as well.

Hoodia Diet and Green Tea: A Healthy Combination

Jul 14, 2009

The problem with weight gain and obesity has not been solved. With the continuing influence of fast food restaurants and instant meals it has continually worsened over the years. Today there is no known exact cure or solution for weight gain and obesity. The main problem is not the food that we eat but our eating habits. As the old saying goes you can't teach old dogs new tricks. Fortunately a new weight loss supplement called the hoodia diet addresses this problem. If you have problems with eating then why not control it? Due to its popularity it has also come in different brands and forms. The original diet pill is now combined with green tea. The hoodia diet pills It was first introduced to the public in November 2004 on television show called 60 minutes. Ever since then hoodia has sparked the interest of manufacturers and has taken over the weight loss industry. It's from a plant called hoodia gordonni. It grows in the Kalahari dessert of South Africa. The locals use it during long hunting trips to suppress hunger and thirst. By using that same concept it is now being used as a weight loss supplement. It naturally suppresses your appetite by tricking your brain. It releases a chemical in the satiety center of your brain. This center is located at the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus then sends a signal to the brain that it has consumed enough food. The dieter will feel full even though he or she has taken little or no food at all. This is much more convenient than preparing portion sized meals. Dieters don't have to follow a strict regimen. They don't have to adhere to a diet recipe. It's similar to light fasting without the hunger pains. Dieters don't have to restrain themselves which lead to food binges. The diet's main source is plant which makes it 100% safe and natural. It does not contain any another ingredients which has side effects. It does not contain ephedrine, caffeine and stimulants. It has no side effects. It enables the individual to control the diet not the other way around. It will help them control their cravings such as midnight snacks. More often than not it's our eating habit which is the problem not the food that we eat. Sometimes we eat not because we are hungry out of habit. Manufacturers have combined the natural properties of hoodia with green tea. Green tea boosts your metabolism. This makes it easier for you to bu fats and calories. It also contains anti-oxidants that helps maintain fluid balance. It also boosts your immune system and contains antibacterial properties. It lowers bad cholesterol and prevents cancer. Although this combination can seem to be enthralling consumers should always remember to buy genuine products. Consumers should make sure that they are buying genuine hoodia and green tea. Any manufacturer can claim that they have a miracle pill. They should not buy from sites who advertise with low prices. Hoodia is rare and expensive. Combining it with another ingredient does not make it any cheaper. Consumers should make their own research first before buying. The hoodia diet with green tea is a good combination. This way you're loosing weight and you're maintaining your health at the same time. By reducing calorie intake it will be much easier for you to bu them with a good metabolism.

Dieting for Weight Loss

The most common reason that people cite for dieting today is weight loss. While most of us would love to claim the noble mantle of dieting for health the vast majority of us are doing so for vanity. This, however, is a perfectly acceptable and plausible reason for making the lifestyle changes that are necessary in order to diet. In fact, this reason might prove to be a far greater motivator than many of the other commonly stated reasons for dieting. When dieting for weight loss one of the most common complaints is constantly feeling hungry. In order to help combat this, you might want to incorporate some of the following strategies into your dieting program. First of all, eat more high fiber foods. Whole grains, apples, pears, and lima beans are a great source of fiber as are many breakfast cereals. Easy does it however when it comes to fiber as it may be filling but there are some unpleasant side effects that may accompany heavy fiber eating (remember that beans are a good source of fiber). Try using a product such as Bean-o when consuming larger amounts of fiber. You might also try spreading your fiber intake throughout the day rather than consuming all your daily fiber at once. Another method for feeling fuller when dieting is to drink plenty of water while dieting. Water provides an important service to the body and is very necessary when it comes to delivering all the nutrients where they need to go. Water also helps regulate your metabolism, which is very important to the dieting and weight loss process. Additionally, water will help you skin retain its elasticity so that your skin can go more easily back into place once the serious weight loss begins. Lea to control your portions. We live in a world where portions are over inflated and super sized so often that we no longer know what an appropriate portion looks like. Restaurant meals are quite often more than adequate for at least two full meals and that is before salads, soups, appetizers, or desserts have been ordered. Leaing to portion correctly can save you from over loading your calorie intake for the day massively. It can also help you get extra helpings of the lower calorie foods such as lettuce and other vegetables rather than taking such large portions of calorie rich starches or fried foods. Do not go "Gung Ho". There are limits to what the body and the mind can handle. When you go on a diet you are making a drastic change to your bodies caloric intake. If you go overboard you can lead to health risks along the way. Begin cutting calories a little at a time and incorporate changes as you go rather than going in with an all or nothing attitude. If you go overboard with your dieting plans chances are that you are dooming your diet to failure. Take your diet one step at a time for the best results and be sure to incorporate extra physical activity into the mix. Even gardening when done on a regular basis can bu calories, so can cleaning the house, and playing with the little ones. Take a walk to the park or the coer store rather than getting in the car and pull a wagon or push a stroller while you're at it. The added weight will be just enough resistance to bu a few extra calories. Dieting for weight loss does not necessarily have to be a major sacrifice on your part but in order to be successful it will be a radical change in lifestyle, particularly if you need to lose more than a few vanity pounds. The health implications of loosing the weight are well worth the required effort and should not be taken lightly no matter how excited you are about your new body that is hiding inside your old one. The Brahma Satya Reiki

Brahma Satya Reiki is a recent evolution of Reiki which originated from India as a result of descent of Shiva-Shakti as Brahma Satya. This descent was said to occur sometime in August of 1997. It was during this time that Deepak Hardikar was drawn into the waves of this descent in deep meditative states that the brahma sutras, or the universal keys were revealed. Along with this revelation came the existence of the system now known as Brahma Satya Reiki. In further explaining Brahna Satya Reiki, one must be able to lea and understand its name. "Reiki" is a Japanese word that is the result of joining together of two words. One of the words is "Rei" which means Universal and "Ki" which means the Life Force Energy. As for the Indian origin of the name, "Brahma" means Brahmaan or the Universe and "Satya" means the Truth. It can be said that "Reiki" is just a similar translation of the original Indian word, "Brahmaprana". Reiki or Brahmaprana can both be explained as that life force energy which exists all over the universe. It is through that primal energy from which the life forms exist in the entire universe. Brahma Satya Reiki therefore can be further described as the Universal Truth of the Universal Life Force Energy. Through this new type of Reiki method, it is said that Reiki exists in the form of Shakti, Shiva-Shakti and Shiva. These are considered as the three primal energies which are radiated out of the very source of universal existence. Through this, practitioners believe Reiki as also to refer to the Divine energy. Each of the three primal energies represents the primal vibrations and has their own special and unique characteristics. The first primal energy, Shakti, is believed to provide inner strength essential for the realization of any type of task. Shiva is said to be the primal energy that is responsible for the completion or dissolution of any task. Shiva-Shakti is said to be that primal energy which combines the two other primal energies of Shiva and Shakti. Through Shiva-Shakti the two can be considered either as independently functioning energies or also a joint form of these two primal energies. Shiva-Shakti is a very rare form of primal energy that requires inner strength and an intrinsic realization of the inner core knowledge required for the fulfillment and completion of any task. This intrinsic realization can also result in the feeling of contentment and satisfaction which can bring about a constant experience of bliss. The Brahma Satya Reiki is the only type of the Reiki system that is known to be based upon the Shiva-Shakti. In general, Brahma Satya Reiki, just like other forms of Reiki that has been developed through the years, is commonly understood as a holistic natural healing system. It is a system that provides individual well-being. It is a system that is very simple to lea and practice. The Brahma Satya Reiki is also considered as a stress relieving relaxation technique. Practice of the said system can effectively help dissolve existing pains and other struggles experienced by individuals. The practice of Brahma Satya Reiki focuses attention towards the conscious awareness of all factors that essentially cause the pains and struggles that people experience. Brahma Satya Reiki gives importance upon the practical applicability of reiki, be it related to the physical body, emotional issues or the handling of life's various adverse situations. This system of reiki also stresses on the long distance method of healing, which is considered as a definite shift from all of the other existing forms of reiki. This aspect of the Brahma Satya Reiki is a distinct advantage in situations where the touch healing aspect of reiki is too difficult to be practically adopted.

Causes of Mental Health Disorders

Jul 13, 2009

It is amazing how a lump of gray matter could manipulate all the systems in our body in the most systematic way possible with all the intricacies and complex functioning. But what's queer about this stuff (the organ we call brain) is that it could malfunction in a way that it could result to single or multiple representations of mental health problems all in an individual. Clinical research and laboratory observations consistently arrive at a conclusion that mental health disorders are products of the accumulation and interaction of several contributing factors. It would have been easier to identify each disorder if there is only one cause to all meal health disorders but that simply isn't the truth. In reality, all mental disorders could root from several causes such as an environment that is conducive to the development of a mental disorder or individual genetic make-up that programs the brain (or the faulty components of the brain) to develop into something non-normal. Saying that it's all about the pathological make-up of the brain that causes the mental health disorders is simplistic, to say the least. Looking at the strange development of these disorders would reveal that there are actually at least 3 contributing factors that may be seen as potential causes, all of which have varying degrees. This means that a particular culprit could be more dominant than the other. First with the physical causes. This bracket of causes is biological in nature. Each individual has a distinct and unique biological make-up that dictates the direction of his health, may it be physical or mental. Some people are bo with inherent tendency to develop a specific mental disorder in comparison with other people while others are less prone to risks. This cause also covers the genetic make-up of an individual, the biological make-up and the events in life that affects the physical body (such as a trauma on the head or substance abuse). Second are the environmental or social causes. Nature VS Nurture has been a great debate in the scientific community but research confirms that a person experience a spilt-half of both. Nature of course are the physical attributes of an individual while Nurture reflects more on the social structures and physical, emotional and mental environments to which an individual was exposed to. This factor tells us more on how an individual grew up, the interaction of influences that affected all facets of his growth and the mechanisms he used to cope with a specific environment. It is observable that some mental disorders are caused primarily by the consequences of experience brought about by the environment. For example, people (especially children) living in a stressful, chaotic and unstable environment are more likely to develop mental illnesses than those individuals living in peaceful environment. This consequence is due to the fact that there are certain social and environmental components that may become risk factors to the development of mental health problems. Third is the psychological factor. This particular factor tells us more on the psychological state of a person, his coping mechanisms to certain life events that could otherwise end up with psychological disorders, his perception on his own self and his environment and thought pattes that affect his mental health. For example, someone who has gone beyond the limit of his stress coping capacity is likely to break down mentally as a result of the psyche's automatic "lock down" to protect itself. For the majority of people lacking mental health, it is often the case of triggering the mental health to break down through series factors that have eventually contributed to the cause of mental health disorder.

Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder

Giving unconditional love for bipolar disorder patients is a tough job. If you do not understand what is happening to your loved one, then you will have difficulty relating to them. Do not think of the illness as humiliation. If you will feel ashamed of your loved one because he is inflicted with such illness, then you are not helping him restore his good health, instead you are letting him do worse than expected. Trust is essential to individuals with Bipolar disorder. They need you to trust them, not entrust them to other people or institutions such as the psychiatrists or an asylum. To build up trust, an open and honest communication is needed. Keep the communication line open. An open and honest communication is vital. Encourage your loved one to talk about what he thinks and feels. Let him suggest ways on how you are supposed to relate to him. Do not suppress what you feel. However, there are positive ways to let your loved know how you feel. It is recommended that you avoid nagging, preaching or lecturing an individual with Bipolar disorder. Such negative actions will drive him to detach. If you are conceed about him, let him see how conceed you are in a gentle and encouraging manner. Let him do things his way. Along with trust and communication, let the person experience what he can do for himself. Let him solve problems if he can find solutions. Let him live the way he is supposed to live. By that, he will feel that he is important and has a good reason why he lives. Be there. Although you allow him to do his own way, it does not mean that you will not be there when he needs you to. Let him do things his way but make sure that you are around to give assistance when needed. Most importantly, apart from assistance, you need to offer your love, understanding and support.

Atkins Maintenance

Jul 12, 2009

The final phase of the Atkins diet plan is lifetime maintenance. This is the time to continue your new eating plan at a maintenance level and keep yourself at your goal weight. The habits you have created will now become a permanent way of life. During the third phase, pre-maintenance, you leaed exactly how many carbohydrate grams your body can tolerate and still maintain your ideal weight. In this phase, you'll put this approach into practice and lea to live with your ideal carb count on a daily basis. During lifetime maintenance you will continue to expand your food selections and eat more carbohydrate grams than you did previously. Depending on your specific metabolic needs, you can eat some of the foods that you enjoyed prior to starting your weight loss program. If you do choose to eat these foods, they must be moderated and used sparingly. Keeping your daily carb count right around your ideal carb count is the easiest way to maintain your weight loss. You weight may fluctuate by two or three pounds from time to time, but this is perfectly normal. This weight fluctuation is due to hormonal changes in your body. During maintenance you'll also lea how to overcome your previous bad habits. Losing weight and keeping it off means dealing with real-world situations. You'll develop coping strategies for stress eating, emotional eating and holiday eating. You'll also develop plans for dealing with eating out in restaurants. The challenges during the maintenance phase are many, but they can be overcome. It's all about preparation. When you've followed the Atkins diet plan for a long time, you've leaed exactly how many carbohydrate grams you can handle. You've also leaed what foods trigger carbohydrate cravings and which foods lead to binges. You've developed coping strategies over the course of your OWL and pre-maintenance phases that you will have to use in lifetime maintenance. To prepare yourself for lifetime maintenance, make a promise to yourself never to go back to your previous weight. Make the commitment by donating all of your "fat" clothes. This way, if you do start to gain more than five pounds, you'll know that you have to buckle down and eat better. Also, write down in a joual or in a list format all of the benefits of being at your new, thinner size. Write about how much better you feel and how healthy you are. This will cement your new way of life into your mind and your heart. Choose your lifetime maintenance weight goal range. This is a range of weight that is acceptable to you. For example, if your initial weight loss goal was to be 165 lbs, your lifetime maintenance goal will be 160 to 170 pounds. If your weight starts to creep up toward 170 pounds, then you know that you are being too lenient with your carbohydrate grams. Never let your weight vary more than 3 to 5 pounds in either direction. Make a commitment to weigh yourself at least once a week. This once-a-week weigh in will give you a good idea of how you are doing on your maintenance program. Use that weekly weight as a guideline for your approach in eating for the following week. In addition to these guidelines, make sure to continue an exercise program. Your metabolism depends entirely upon the amount of exercise that you are getting. Making the commitment to exercise goes hand in hand with the commitment to keep eating correctly. By following these guidelines, you can make lifetime maintenance simple and easy. PPPPP (word count 593)

Natural Remedies for Losing Weight - The Cross Training Support Program

The Cross Training Support Program is rather unique in that it advocates that weight loss can be helped with Aromatherapy, Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Exercise, Nutrition and Lifestyle Changes, Crystals and/or Homeopathy. In other words, complementary therapies are the cross training. As with all plans to lose weight, you will still need to eat less and exercise more. Consume less sugar, simple carbohydrates and saturated fats. It's just as basic as that. No matter what other supplements or capsules you take, the bottom line is still you have to work to get it off. At the root of obesity is a physiological and psychological problem. It seems about 66% of adults in the USA are overweight or obese. It that isn't scary enough, about 25 million young people are either overweight or on the brink of becoming so. What does cross training suggest you do? They offer a 12 step program if you will that covers all the natural remedies for losing weight. The first is think of your weight loss as a lifestyle change, not a diet. Don't count calories (that's a radical one), just replace high fat content with low fat content. Eat low on the sugar index, to avoid highs and lows in your blood sugar that can lead to increased insulin production and conversion of calories to fat. Don't drink - it's fattening. Exercise, no way around it. Drink lots of water. Eat more frequently during the day. Take vitamins. Cut back on meat products. Reduce your portions. Believe in yourself and what you are doing. Sleep well. Overcome fears. The 12-step cross training program for losing weight isn't anything we haven't heard before. It doesn't offer lotions, potions or pills. It offers a plain old reasonable common sense natural remedy for losing weight. Are you up to the challenge?

Dieting to Lose a Few Vanity Pounds

Jul 11, 2009

There are those among us who wish to lose a few pounds rather than 20 or more pounds. While many of us would be grateful if that were the case for us, most will find that the smaller the amount of weight needed to lose the more difficult it seems to remove. The good news is that those with little weight to lose generally do not face the painful issues with exercise and physical activity that plague those with far more weight to lose. There are some great products on the market that will assist those with relatively little weight to lose enjoy the weight loss process without feeling deprived. The new market of 100-calorie snacks is an excellent tool for just this situation. You can get the treats you need to get you through the day without exactly packing on the pounds in the process. You can count calories to no end but if you have only a few pounds to reach your goal weight and aren't delighted with your tight and tone new body, then perhaps it's best to work on tightening and toning rather than more dieting. The thing that far too many people forget along the way is that dieting can only get you so far when it comes to results. There will come a time when weight training and cardio exercises of some sort are the only thing that is going to get you to the body you so rightly desire. Dieting is good for dropping the pounds, but dieting alone is unlikely to bring you the body of your dreams. You should also keep in mind that exercising and ramping up your fitness routine is a great way to renew your dedication to the process and your enthusiasm. This is particularly true if you have found a fitness routine that is appealing to you. The fitness routines of today are not the tired old aerobics workout of the 1980's. You have many options ranging from kick boxing, Tae Bo, Yoga, Pilates, and even belly dancing for those that dare. The point is that you are not as limited as you may think when it comes to entertaining options for your workout routine. Find a workout that you can actually be excited about doing and do it. There is a lot of truth to the old Nike commercials that boldly proclaimed: "Just Do It". Whatever it may be in your fitness routine, it will not do itself. You must be an active participant in your weight loss and fitness endeavors in order to achieve any results that will be favorable. Whether your weight loss and dieting goals are to shed a few pounds or many pounds along the way it is quite likely that you will at some point reach a plateau in which you discover that you need to ramp up either your level of physical activity or calorie buing methods or you will need to ramp up your calorie cutting exercises. Either way, dealing with the setback is almost as important as your decision to lose those pounds in the first place. Get back in the game and renew your efforts. In no time you should have lost those few pounds that you were hoping to lose and established the body you were aiming to create. PPPPP 560

How Juvenile Diabetes is Diagnosed

It can be scary when you realize that something may be wrong with your child. You will want to find out right away what it is and how you can help. The testing that is done to determine if your child has juvenile diabetes is not very evasive and can be determined in a very short period of time. Once you have taken your child to your health care provider, blood work will be ordered to check your child's blood glucose levels. The first test that is performed is normally a with a blood glucose monitor in your doctor's office. If the level is high a fasting blood glucose test will be ordered. Your child will not be able to eat for 8-10 hours prior to the blood being drawn. It is best to do this first thing in the moing as soon as your child wakes up. Bring a snack along for your child to eat after the blood work as they are sure to be hungry. Depending on the results from the fasting blood test your doctor will probably order another round of tests to verify the results. This test is also done on an empty stomach and you should make an appointment as you will have to be in the office from 1-3 hours. When you arrive at the lab your child will have some blood drawn and then be asked to drink a beverage that is high in sugar. After one hour another blood test will be conducted to see how your child's body has processed the sugar. If the three hour test was ordered two more blood tests will be done at the two hour and three hour marks. The results from this test will give your doctor the information needed to make a diagnosis of juvenile diabetes in your child.

Ten of the Best Types of Massage Therapy

Jul 10, 2009

Massage therapy has been around for hundreds of years. If you need to relief from muscle pain or stress, you can choose from one of the ten best types of massage therapy around. 1. First is Swedish massage therapy. This happens to be the most common type to find in the US because it is very gentle and relaxing. Here, the masseuse will use long strokes, kneading and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil. 2. Next is aromatherapy and the reason why it is called such is because one or more scented plant oils are used during the session. You will just have to select the oil you want to use. In fact, the most popular one is lavender as it is well suited for stress related conditions together with an emotional component. 3. There is also hot stone massage. Here, heated smooth stones are placed on certain parts of the body to help loosen those tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body. At times, the masseuse may also apply gentle pressure especially for those who have muscle tension. 4. Then there is deep tissue massage. This type is designed to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Here, the masseuse will use slow strokes better known as friction techniques across the grain of the muscle. The distinctive feature of deep tissue massage is that it is used on those that have chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems and recovery from injury. You will often feel sore for the next day or two. 5. Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage therapy. Here, the masseuse will use localized finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians. Each point is held for 2 to 8 second designed to improve the flow of energy and help the body regain balance. Those who have tried it say that it is relaxing yet firm. The best part is that there is no soreness afterwards. 6. Thai massage is similar to Shiatsu because it aligns the energies of the body using gentle pressure on specific points. Part of the session also includes compressions and stretches as you are moved in a variety of postures just like yoga but in this case, you don't do anything except go with the flow. 7. For women that are expecting, they can opt for pregnancy massage. It is designed to relieve stress, decrease swelling, relieve aches and pins as well as reduce anxiety and depression. 8. Reflexology is also known as foot massage because it involves applying pressure to certain points on the foot. Those who practice this believe that the foot corresponds to certain organs and systems so if you are able to work on that, you have also done it in the whole body. 9. Then there is sports massage that is designed for people involved in sports activities. This type is designed not only for professional athletes since it helps prevent and treat physical injuries. 10. Lastly is back massage which usually lasts 30 minutes. Unlike reflexology that focuses on the feet because it represents special points in the body, this one simply relieves tension in the back caused by lifting heavy objects or driving for long periods of time. Of course there are other kinds of massage therapy aside from the top ten most popular ones mentioned. Given that these are the only ones available in spas, perhaps you should just stick with the best sellers.

The Exchange Diet

Jul 9, 2009

The exchange diet is a method of eating that provide diabetic with a set of guidelines necessary to eat healthy. A dietician will help prepare and educate you on the exchange diet – the food groups and what substitutions you can make. On the exchange diet all foods are divided into six food groups: * Breads and other Starches * Fruit * Vegetables * Dairy Foods * Meat and Meat Substitutes * Fats Your dietician will provide you with the number of servings you should have from each group daily and at individual meal or snack times. Within each of the categories there are many food options. Each food has a specific serving size that equals one serving, in cases such as fruits and vegetables you probably will not have to measure your foods but for meats and other groups a food scale and measuring cup is recommended. The exchange part of the diet refers to being able to swap a food in one food group for another in the same group as long as you adhere to the serving suggestion. For instance ½ cup of cooked pasta can be exchanged for 2 rice cakes in one meal. The list your dietician gives you will be pretty complete but there are bound to be items not listed. In that case, you can call your dietician for advice or keep a list of items that you need to know the proper serving size for. At the beginning the exchange diet may seem like a lot of work, but as time goes on and you become accustomed to the serving sizes of your favorite foods it will become less so. Proper eating habits are crucial to managing diabetes and the exchange diet is a way to eat a healthy balanced diet full of variety.

Qualities of a good massage therapy clinic

Nowadays, massage therapy is recognized by the medical society and is considered by the public because of its health and relaxation purposes. In mode times, a lot of new methods and techniques of massage have emerged and more people are now aware of the value of massage therapy. In fact, a lot of states are already enforcing laws on massage therapy clinics and practices. Massage therapists are even required to get licenses before they can practice in a specific area. Of course, the law will be different from one state to another and until a federal law is passed, this will remain so. But with all the massage therapy clinics that have been cropping up in every street coer in the metro, it has become hard to choose among them. Most of the time, what factors in our decision whether to go in or not is not actually the service but the ambiance or the aura that the store has. This is very unfortunate as we are compromising our safety for a great window display. Below are some of the qualities that a good massage therapy clinic should have. 1. Wide range of massages One quality that a good massage therapy clinic should have is a wide range of choices for their customers. There are many kinds of massage therapy being done and having some of them in your list of services means that you are not just a too-bit business establishment. Also, a wide selection of services also allow people to try out different things. After all, there is a different massage therapy that is appropriate for every person and for every situation. 2. Professional masseurs Another important characteristic of a good massage therapy clinic is having professional masseurs. This means that the massage therapists should have at least a license in the kind of massage they are doing and several years of experience. That way, you can be sure that what they are doing is right and good for your body. You see, when done the wrong way, the massage therapy strokes can cause health problems, sprain someone and even maim in some instances. 3. Quality equipment and oil Another thing that you can look into when determining how great a massage therapy clinic is the equipment and materials that they use for the massage. Remember that what they will be using will determine how good your experience will be during the massage. The oils that they use for instance can help in soothing the muscles and relaxing the body. The more upscale massage therapy clinics will even use oils that have scents. These can be more expensive but at least what you are getting is the real thing. 4. good location Believe it or not, the location of a place also determines whether a massage therapy clinic will become a success or not. A good location with a lot of people can mean constant foot traffic. No matter how great your service is, if people do not know that your business exists, it will come to nothing. You need to be in a place where you can be seen by people. 5. Reasonable price Another important quality of a good massage therapy clinic is of course the price. A reasonably priced service with a good service will definitely be a success hands down.

The Italian Food Diet

Jul 8, 2009

It seems recently that among health circles Italian food has gotten a bad rep. With the advent of Atkins many former Italian food fans have steered clear of the cuisine because of all the pasta that is used. However, this idea that pasta will make you fat is largely unfounded. A diet of Italian food, especially from the Mediterranean is actually very healthy and will keep you looking and feeling great as long as you know what Italian food to eat and how to prepare it. A great example of the fact that Italian food will not make you fat is in Sophia Loren. She told the world in her book that she grew up on spaghetti and ate it constantly. She says that it is not the pasta that makes you fat; it's what you put on top of it. People who gain weight eating Italian food typically do so not because of the pasta, but because of creamy sauces like Alfredo sauce and because they eat in too large portions. Italian food from the Mediterranean doesn't rely on rich, thick sauces and uses olive oil instead of butter, making it very healthy. It all starts with the ingredients you keep. For good, healthy Italian food you want to make sure you stock the kitchen with quality pasta, olive oil, garlic, onions, lean meat, fish, and seafood. For seasoning you will want some herbs like basil, oregano, and parsley. You'll want to stay away from a lot of cheese and perhaps only get a little parmesan cheese to top your favorite Italian food dishes. The creamy and cheesy Italian food dishes are the ones you're going to want to stay away from to keep a healthy diet. There are several different light Italian food meals that you can prepare with these simple ingredients. Here is one to start you off, an Italian food classic, pasta with tomato sauce. You can use any type of pasta you want and you might want to try livening it up with variety. Italian food is not just spaghetti noodles. Boil the pasta in water with salt. Make sure not to overcook the pasta. You want it to be firm, yet tender. The most common mistake made in making Italian food is making mushy pasta. For the sauce simply chop up some garlic, an onion, and some tomatoes. Take a tablespoon of your quality olive oil and sauté both the garlic and onions until they are soft. Once that is done add the tomatoes and cook until all the ingredients are blended together well. To top it off add your favorite herbs such as parsley, oregano, or basil. Try different combinations of herbs, there is no definitive herbs for Italian food so experiment and give your sauce your own signature flavor. Serve this sauce over your hot pasta and if you want put a little sprinkle of parmesan on it. This is a simple Italian food dish that stands on its own and you won't need to eat bread or anything else with it. This is a great example of how healthy Italian food is supposed to be, light and fresh. Feel free to try different variations on this recipe. Italian food is full of a variety of pastas and recipes that can keep you satisfied and healthy as long as you stay away from the heavy sauces and creams.

Healthy Dieting Tips

Jul 7, 2009

When it comes to dieting you will find all kinds of crazy and faddish diets on the market today. In addition to the many diets there seems to be every kind of diet aid you can imagine. From shakes the diet industry has evolved to include everything from candy bars and pudding to pills and patches. Each item makes the claim that it can help you drop those unwanted pounds quickly and easily. Well I can tell you for a fact there is very little easy for must of us about dropping a few pounds. If you would like a few tips that should make your weight loss goals a little easier to achieve then perhaps the following tips will help you out. Drink Plenty of Water There really isn't enough that can be said about the importance of drinking water in an effort to reach your fitness goals. Water hydrates the body first and foremost but water is also an important way of tricking your body into believing it is full. Other drinks do not work nearly as well as water in this endeavor and many drinks, even fruit juices, contain empty calories that you can ill afford when dieting. Another great thing about drinking a lot of water while dieting is that it helps your skin retain its elasticity so you can avoid some of the 'loose skin' look that often accompanies massive weight loss. As an added bonus drinking plenty of water will have your skin looking radiant and beautiful as well. Set Goals Having goals is one of the most important things you can do when working to loose weight. Try to make sure that your goals are aggressive but can be achieved. If you are frustrated early in the dieting process by unrealistic goals you are much more likely to give up. However, challenges are always going to inspire us to achieve greater things in life. If you can find a 'weight loss partner' in order to have a little friendly competition for the weight loss totals for a week or a month then you are going to be far more likely to accomplish your goals than if you keep them quietly to yourself. Eat More Did you read that twice? Yes, eat more healthy foods that are high in fiber. Eat more vegetables and fruits-fill up on these foods that are good for you and you will not be inclined to binge on calorie laden junk food. Move! While this seems a little too simply stated for most, getting up and moving is one of, if not the absolute best way to bu calories. The simple truth is that you are not going to lose weight unless you use more calories than you consume. The more activities you enjoy that bu calories, the more likely you are to shed those unwanted pounds and meet your weight loss goals. Some great activities that actually bu calories include the following: gardening, golf, dancing, playing volleyball, walking, jumping rope, playing hop scotch with your little ones, and playing tennis. I mention these activities because you can trick yourself into believing that you aren't really exercising while buing calories. Even cleaning house requires movement and energy and if you dance around a little to some good music in the process you might bu a few extra calories. Dieting, when successful can help restore self image and self-esteem in people who are otherwise beautiful people inside and out. The steps above are not the only things that are involved in the dieting process but they can help you reach your weight loss goals particularly when combined with a diet plan that you feel confident you can follow. Be sure that on those days when will power is non-existent that you do not derail your diet efforts all together by giving up. The most important thing you can do when dieting is to go back to dieting once you've strayed. PPPPP 664

How to Find the Best Weight Loss Program for You

Jul 5, 2009

Are you looking to lose weight? If you are, you may be interested in joining a weight loss program. When it comes to joining a weight loss program, you will find that you have a number of different options. If this is your first time joining a weight loss program, you may be unsure as to what you should look for in a weight loss program. If that is the case, you will want to continue reading on. One of the best ways to go about finding the perfect weight loss program for yourself is to ask yourself a number of important questions. One of the first questions that you should ask yourself is how much time you have to devote to weight loss meetings. If you were to join a local weight loss program, you would likely be required to attend weekly meeting. Whether you are busy with your family or busy at work, you may not have the time to do so. In that case, you should look into joining an online weight loss program, as they are often designed for those with busy schedules. Another question that you will want to ask yourself, when looking to find the perfect weight loss program is your willpower. Should you join an online weight loss program, you will be given more freedom, as you do not have to physically report to meetings and answer to group leaders. While this freedom is nice, it has allowed many hopeful individuals to go off track. If you do not think that you can stick with your online weight loss program goals and instructions, it may be better to join a local weight loss program instead. Another one of the many questions that you will want to ask yourself, when looking for a weight loss program to join, is how much money you have to spend. While it is possible to find free weight loss programs, both locally or online, it is actually quite rare. In your search for weight loss programs, you will find that they have a wide range of membership fees. Commonly, you will find that online weight loss programs are cheaper than locally operated weight loss programs. If you are on a budget, the cost of each weight loss program that you come across should play a large role in your decision. You should also ask yourself if you are embarrassed with your current weight or your physical appearance. Although you should have nothing to be ashamed of, you may still feel that way. If that is the case, you may be afraid of attending local weight loss meetings. Of course, you need to remember that everyone else in your meetings is likely feeling the same way, but you don't have to put yourself in an awkward situation. If you are conceed with your appearance or what others may think of you, you may want to look into joining an online weight loss program instead. The above mentioned questions are just a few of the many that you should ask yourself if you are interested in joining a weight loss program. While there are a number of benefits to joining a locally operated weight loss program, as well as an online weight loss program, you need to make the decision that is best for you and your own needs. Weight Loss Surgery: Is It Worth the Money?

Are you interested in losing weight? If you are, how much weight would you like to lose? If you are looking to lose eighty pounds or more in weight, did you know that you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery? Although it is nice to hear that you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery, you may be wondering if weight loss surgery is right for you. More importantly, you may be wondering if weight loss surgery is worth the money. If that is a question that you would like answered, you will want to continue reading on. In short, the question as to whether or not weight loss surgery is worth the money has a simple answer; it all depends. While that may not have necessarily been the answer that you were looking for, it is the truth. For many individuals, weight loss surgery is well worth it; however, there are others who don't end up benefiting from weight loss surgery. To determine if weight loss surgery is worth the cost to you, personally, you will want to take a number of factors into consideration. One of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration, when determining if weight loss surgery is worth the cost for you, is your weight. You will find that many weight loss surgeons require that you are at least eighty pounds overweight to undergo weight loss surgery. With that in mind, you may be able to find a surgeon who will make an exception, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you should opt for surgery. If you are able to try to lose the weight on your own, through the use of exercise, eating healthy, or diet pills, you may find it more affordable to do so. Your health is another factor that you should take into consideration, when trying to determine if weight loss surgery is right for you. Weight loss surgery is commonly referred to as a lifesaving medical procedure. Those who are severely obese put their health at risk and may experience an early death. If you are severely obese, your physician may recommend weight loss surgery. If that is the case, weight loss surgery is more than worth the costs, as you cannot put a price tag on your health and wellbeing. Your ability to set goals and stay with them is another factor to consider, when determining if weight loss surgery is worth the cost to you. Weight loss surgery may help you lose weight right away, but the surgery alone will not help you lose weight. With a reduced stomach pouch, which is how most weight loss surgeries work, you must limit the amount of food that you eat. If you do not do so, you may gain your weight back and possibly endanger your health. If you do not think that you can follow all of the instructions given to you, following a weight loss surgery, surgery may not be the best option for you. The above mentioned factors are just a few of the many that can help you decide if weight loss surgery is right for you or if it is worth the cost. As a reminder, it is important that you take the time to first consult with your doctor. Not all individuals are candidates for weight loss surgery. PPPPP Word Count 561

There Is A Massage Therapy Known As Thai Massage

Jul 2, 2009

You have probably tried out massage therapy in the past. Aside from back massages and shiatsu, there is a massage therapy known as Thai massage. Thai massage was developed 2500 years ago by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha. It moved to Thailand soon after where the Ayurvedic techniques and principles gradually became influenced by traditional Chinese medicine and this is how it got the name. What makes Thai massage different is the fact that it is more energizing and rigorous than other forms of massage. In Thai massage, the therapist will use his or her hands, knees, legs and feet to move you into a series of yoga like stretches. Aside from that, there is also muscle compression, joint mobilization and acupressure during the session. When you have a Thai massage, you will be told to lie on a padded mat that is already set on the floor. The therapist does the session using gently compression and stretching techniques to open the body starting with the legs then working their way up. You don't have to take off your clothes but as much as possible, wear something comfortable. No oil is also used and most sessions may last for 1 to 2 hours long. Unknown to many, Thai massage is a combination of other types of massage therapies. Part of it is reflexology because a lot of attention is paid to the feet and legs as this helps to better connect the person to the earth causing them to be "grounded." Another is blood stopping where pressure is put on a major artery for about a minute. This will cause the heart muscle to slow its contractions and bring the pressure down. Once released, it will help the person relax more deeply. This technique however cannot be used on patients who have heart or circulatory problems and diabetes. Thai massage is known to reduce stress, improve circulation, increase energy and flexibility, improve range of motion and centers the mind and body. You cannot have a Thai massage if you have an infectious skin disease or open wounds, just underwent surgery or chemotherapy and are prone to blood clots. Pregnant women can have a Thai massage only after they get the green light from their doctor. It is best to also have a light meal before going there so there will be no feelings of discomfort during the session. One form of Thai massage involves using herbs and a heated compress. It is often used before and after a session as the ball used here allows the muscle and joints to have greater movement and flexibility. At the same time, the herbs used are then are absorbed by the pores in the body to further release the energy blockages to improve energy imbalances in the body. In fact, some of the herbs are known to draw properties that allow the removal of inflammations and swelling typically found in injuries. There is a massage therapy known as Thai massage and it is here to stay. If you want to try it out, check the neighborhood to see if there is place that offers this to customers. Before you go in, check with your doctor if it is safe for you to try then also make sure that the person doing it is qualified to do the job.

With discipline and proper mind set, a dieter will never be discouraged and lose focus. Third: Listen as the body speaks. Each and everyone's body metabolism reacts differently to different fast weight loss programs and plans. Try substituting one program for another to compensate the body's reaction. Exercise program must be suitable to one's body, as others are not able to exercise as rigorously as others can. If walking is all that can be done, then walk for this is proven the best exercise. Muscles bu more calories than fats so it's also best to put on a little muscle and looking good too. Fourth: Eat more fibers for it makes a person full sooner and stays in the tummy longer, slowing down the rate of digestion. A single serving of whole grain bread moves fat through the digestive system faster. Grains tu into blood sugar that spikes the body's insulin level. Thus, making the body more energized and ready to tell the body when it should stop buing fats or start storing. Fifth: Keep away from fried foods especially deep-fried as this contains a great amount of fat. Although fish and chicken appear leaner than beef, this white meat can contain more fat than when a beef is fried. It is recommended for those on strict diet to opt for grilled food as this does not have or contain less amount of fat after the food is cooked. Sixth: Takes lots of fluid. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body refreshed. Since weight loss depends on how the body eliminates body wastes, the body must stay hydrated. All in all, discipline and consistency is still the best practice and the key to a rapid weight loss success. Light dieting, workout, and right amount of supplementation applied in a regular way everyday will result in faster weight loss than having a massive action only to be followed a retu to old habits as this would only lead to gaining more weight than when the weight loss plan has started.

Reading Food Labels

On all packaged food that you buy, there is a food label that includes important information to a diabetic. You need to lea how to read them properly and know what the different numbers and percentages mean to you and your diabetic diet. Below is an overview of the basic information you need to know about food labels. Whether you are counting carbohydrates, are following the exchange diet, or you are on the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet you can increase your chances for success by reading your food labels and understanding what they mean. The ingredient list is a good place to start before looking at the numbers in the food label. Where is sugar on the ingredient list? The closer it is to the beginning of the list the more of it is present in the food. That goes the same for all ingredients; manufacturers list the ingredients in order of the amount that is in the product. If there are things in your food that do not work well for your blood sugar on the list it should be avoided or eaten in moderation. Look at the serving size and compare that to the number of carbohydrates is in a serving. Most servings of carbohydrates for a diabetic are 15 grams. If one serving is higher than 15 grams you will have to eat less than the suggested serving size to stay on track with your meal plan. Sugar-free foods may grab your attention as something safe and yummy to add to your shopping cart. But look at the carbohydrate count first. Most foods that are made sugar- free using artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes have higher carbohydrate counts. Check the fat content too, look for a low percent of your daily intake and ideally it will be monounsaturated as opposed to polyunsaturated or saturated fats.

Avoid Dieting Make Positive Changes Instead

Jul 1, 2009

Why is it that merely saying the "D" word, you know "diet" brings immediate thoughts of failure to the minds of many men and women around the world? Could it be that we have all leaed through trial and error that diets simply do not work? I know many of you are sitting back with jaws dropped at the moment. After all, this is an article about dieting, right? It is and it isn't. Dieting is the kiss of death for many while a new phase in your life or lifestyle adjustment may be just the thing that will mean success for you and your fitness and health goals. Eating for some is an addiction. Unfortunately, you can't exactly give up eating all together as a smoker can give up cigarettes. I'm not applying by any means that giving up cigarettes is easy but how much more difficult would it be if you were forced to have three a day? At that point you may as well enjoy them every time the urge hits right? The same holds true for food. You must eat in order to survive. You cannot live without eating. This means that if food is a problem in your life, you must find a healthier way of viewing food. Isn't this where diets generally come in handy? The short answer is no. This is where diets often fail. Diets do very little to change how we view food. In fact, most diets only serve to tell us which foods are good, which foods are bad, and which foods (typically most of the foods we enjoy most) are strictly taboo. Diets begin by forcing people to feel deprived or punished. And no one likes to feel either of these things. Even worse however, is that we punish ourselves further when we slip along the straight and very narrow pathways upon which our diets place us. This means that we are going to wallow in guilt over every little misstep we make until we give up all together and decide to over indulge once again and ignore the guilt all together. In order to have real success you must make a lifestyle change. This is the only way that you will be able to shed those unwanted pounds without experiencing the horrible guilt that so many dieters go through each and every step of the way with their diets. Set goals for yourself. Keep them aggressive but realistic for fitness, dropping pounds, and eating new healthy foods. Even if your goal is as simple as eating 5 vegetable servings a day it is a great place to start. Change your way of eating. Then change your way of seeing food and you will experience amazing changes in your attitudes toward your health, your body, and even your fitness level. As the first pounds begin to drop you will begin to experience more energy and less pain when exercising. This should help keep you motivated to do even more as time goes by. Do not think that long term weight loss goals will be as easy to achieve as the first five or ten pounds. Consistency is vitally important when making these lifestyle changes. Take each day as it comes and begin again the very next day. This means that even if you fall completely "off the wagon" today, you can start over tomorrow. The trick is in staying the course more days than not and leaing moderation and balance when it comes to straying from the straight and narrow. There are many ways to fail when it comes to dieting and I know people who have failed in almost every one I can possibly imagine. There is no way to fail, however, when you are making positive changes in your life that are getting positive results. It may take weeks, months, or even years to reach your goal. As long as you are making steady and continuous efforts and progress, you are doing many great things for your health and well being. PPPPP 680
