Choosing a therapist Step-by-Step The therapy is a process of collaboration, so that the game properly is vital. If you find someone, remember that therapy is work and sometimes can be painful. But it can also be rewarding and life changing. What are the steps for choosing a therapist? 1. Consult your primary care physician, so that a medical cause for your problems. Many physical illnesses can mimic psychological. 2nd Once your problems are not caused by a medical condition, find out what the mental health coverage under your insurance or through Medicaid / Medicare. 3rd Get two or three recommendations before an appointment. Enter your age, sex, race or religious beliefs, if these qualities are important to you. 4th Call for availability date, place and fees. Find out whether your insurance or taxes are income. 5th Make sure the therapist has experience helping people whose problems are similar to yours. Do not be afraid to ask for the experience. 6. If you are satisfied with the answers, make an appointment. 7th During the first visit, to describe the feelings and problems brought to you for help. Find out how the therapist reacts, and what you need options for treatment. Do you feel comfortable with your decisions? 8th Make sure that the psychotherapist is not a "cookie cutter" approach to the treatment - psychotherapy and other medications are limited to the specific needs. You are an individual and your therapist should demonstrate that the prospect. 9th After your first visit, take some 'time to discover how it feels about therapists. Is there a connection? Do you feel comfortable? 10th If all of your approval, Schedule your next appointment. Otherwise, retu to the list that you selected in step 3 and start over again.
